E: Exhaust – Book Review

exhaustMagnolias, Sweet Tea, and Exhaust: One Woman’s Journey to Understanding the Phenomenon of NASCAR is the latest book from author Carole Townsend. This was an ARC provided to me from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Magnolias, Sweet Tea, and Exhaust will be released July 1, 2014.

Like the title says, this book is about NASCAR. Now, I am not a NASCAR fan. However, I am not one of those people who will bemoan it. I respect race car driving, the engineering that goes into the cars, the history of NASCAR (especially living in the heart of moonshine country), and especially the sociology behind the racing culture. That being said, this book was perfect for a person like me. It’s filled with anecdotes from an outsider’s perspective, and not just a fan praising their favorite sport.

Townsend was curious about NASCAR and relatively clueless when she first started doing research. This book chronicles her journey of discovering a new fandom. It contains humorous stories mixed in with facts and history. I suggest this book to anyone who is curious about this high-energy sport. It makes for a great introduction to a truly American pastime.

  1. Again, a good review, which in itself might draw in readers. Not being from the US, we have equivalent sports over this side of the pond, but they don’t really do anything for me.
I do imagine the book will contain plenty of humour.
